My parents used to live in one of those, in the east village. When thieves got into the building, they'd put a car jack between the doors and rob whichever place had the door break first. After the first time it happened, my dad welded up a steel door and frame and the place across from them got broken into about once a month the rest of the time they were there
@mattblaze
Rather. This was the 70s, of course.
@dymaxion The east village in the 70's and early 80's was the incubator for so much incredible culture and art, but there are definitely things I don't miss about it.
But safety has come at a terrible price. The beautiful weirdos who made it so rich can't afford to live there any more
@mattblaze
Yeah. No one seems to be learning the lesson — art, safety, billionaires, pick two
@mattblaze
Eh, you give folks safety, room to breathe and permission to be weird and you find a lotta folks want to make art
@dymaxion The beginning of the end was when it became "The East Village" instead of just the LES or Alphabet City. As soon as real estate agents rename your neighborhood, you're in trouble.
@mattblaze
Yeah... I should have said alphabet city
