My 9 year old and his classmates have started using “that’s AI” to mean “I don’t believe you.”
Me: we’re having dinosaur meat for dinner
Kiddo: that’s AI

@Daojoan Ha, great! 😁
Our 7 year old just learned sarcasm. He's very good at that as well. The deadpan look on his face is almost infuriating.
That worries me. We are raising a generation habituated to rejecting information that doesn't suit them.
Sure their bullshit detectors catch a higher proportion of the bullshit, but along with this is a higher rate of false detections.
When real data and real evidence comes out that doesn't fit their preconceived ideas, will they process it and allow it to affect their views? Or will they say "That's AI."
Might AI further enable and normalize preemptive rejection of facts?
@Daojoan Were you, in fact, having dinosaur meat for dinner?

@Daojoan That's awesome! They get it! We have to think for ourselves. AI is a tool to assist us...not a replacement for independent, critical thought. As math teachers everywhere tell us: "Check your work!"
@Daojoan If you read On Bullshit, which is the definitive philosophical treatise on bullshit, you'll find a lot of correlation between that definition and what LLMs actually do and do well.
The kids seem to have recognized that "AI" is a shoo in for a bad word here they can get away with saying in front of adults. Clever :)
@Daojoan This reminds me of a saying we had in college: “that’s church” to mean “I’ve heard this, but I haven’t verified it,” often when you catch yourself repeating hearsay (maybe it’s a regional saying somewhere, but I don’t know it outside of a particular group of friends).
E.g., “They’re turning the library into a bookstore next year … but that’s church.”
@Daojoan How could that be best translated into german? "Das 's KI" or "KI mich nicht" or just "K - I!" like "Bull-Shit!" Will try to influence my kids to start using that. I'm old. I will use "Erzähl mir keinen vom KI"
"My 9 year old and his classmates have started using “that’s AI” to mean 'I don’t believe you' "
I think that for kids it means: "asshole imbecile"
@Daojoan 15yo says AI is are occasionally referred to as "clangers". he's too young to know about "Toasters" :galactica-actual:
@Daojoan There's currently a big move on to produce meat in vitro in commercial quantities from bovine genetic material so when you said "We're having dinosaur meat for dinner" I assumed it was real, i.e. non-AI and I was going to call our supermarket to see whether they stock it.
@Daojoan It's literally becoming a norm in bangladesh. Though Gen X often can't detect AI slop.
@Daojoan
Ha, great!
The correct term however, is LBM - "large bullshit model".
Btw, i hope you are not making this up ;-)
@Daojoan That is so wrong. We are living in the age of not just digital and computers, but AI, now.
It's easy to get ahold of and kids don't know the difference between AI and other things.
I want this AI to be a fad myself, but AI possibly will turn to Star Wars, Star trek, or Halo in the next 100-500 years.
@Daojoan I didn't realize you were on bsky — I shared over there and it's going viral there too (people have truly had enough of AI's shit). I can delete over there if you want, just let me know.
@Daojoan (Inwardly sighs) OK, so now we'll need a new term for the real thing when it finally arrives. This is the sort of thing that intensely annoys us sci fi writers. Just when we think we have a great vocabulary for the future, the language shifts and we have to rip it up and start again. :D
